Comfrey has so many practical uses and benefits, I want everyone to know how to use comfrey! Studying herbal medicine, it is one thing to read about the healing power of the plants, but another to personally experience it. The more I work hands on with the plants — growing, harvesting, making medicine, sharing and using the plants, the greater my trust in their healing properties.

My herbal teachers have personal stories to share of their experiences working with comfrey, either for themselves or their clients, and I understand comfrey is excellent at promoting the growth of new tissue and speeding the healing process. But until recently, I never had the opportunity to experience the healing power of comfrey for myself. The cut was long and deep, and wild yarrow was the first plant applied to stop the rapid bleeding.

Yarrow is an excellent styptic — its ability to stop bleeding has been known since ancient times, and legend has it that Achilles and his warriors carried yarrow into battle to treat their wounds. Once we had the bleeding stopped, and the wound cleansed, a poultice of comfrey was applied. Ideally this poultice would have been reapplied for several days, but the busyness of modern life limited the comfrey applications.

However, even with just a few applications of the poultice, the rapid closing and healing of this wound was remarkable. Had we sought medical care at the local urgent care center, stitches would have been applied to close the wound and likely a scolding for packing it with the yarrow!

Instead, comfrey sped the healing process. Comfrey is a perennial plant that produces large leaves and bell-shaped flowers. Late last summer I harvested the leaves and dried them, storing them in a glass jar.

It was the dried leaves we used to make the poultice.

Comfrey leaves are nutrient-rich and are beneficial in the garden. The Permaculture Research Center has this to say about comfrey in the garden. It is this ability to help cycle nutrients through the soil that has given comfrey its designation as a dynamic accumulator plant. Like daikon, stinging nettles, and other plants that function as dynamic accumulators, comfrey leaves make an excellent fertilizer, and provide a nutrient boost to compost mixes. Additionally, comfrey leaves are used as a green manure and mulch, being cut, then spread over planting beds and left to decompose on site, further helping to condition soils.

Cutting and placing the first flush of comfrey leaves in trenches where potatoes are to be planted is thought to provide the tubers with nutrients that will result in an increased yield.

It is important to use only the leaves of the plant when mulching, as any cut stems have the potential to take root. Comfrey is hardy from zones 4 — 9, and will grow in full or partial sun.

Because of the penetrating roots, I am not sure how well comfrey would do contained in a pot. Perhaps a large, deep pot would work. Comfrey is a permanent part of my expanding perennial herb garden. The plants put out blooms all summer and I enjoy the abundant bees and pollinators that visit daily.

New growth replaces the cuttings which are dried and saved for a winter supply. If you want to learn more about how to grow comfrey, and the many uses of comfrey in the garden, Amy at Tenth Acre Farm has a great post about growing comfrey.

The simplest way to use comfrey for a wound is as a poultice. Using fresh or dried leaves, combine with warm water and place over the wound, covering with a bandage. The poultice should be damp but not drippy.

Sometimes herbs are mixed with other ingredients to make a paste, which clings better to the area being treated. Comfrey leaves tend to be quite large, so we simply used the moistened leaves. Another simple method is to apply a compress.

A clean cloth is then soaked in the tea and applied once cooled to prevent burns to the injured area. Repeat this application, replacing with a warm compress cloth.

Comfrey-infused oils can be made by infusing an oil with the fresh or dried leaves.A little over a month ago, I wrote about the discovery of the endocannabinoid system — which is arguably one of the most important endogenous systems known to man. There is so much going on inside our bodies that we are only now starting to understand — and that is all thanks to curiosities raised about the marijuana plant.

With an understanding of the endocannabinoid system comes an understanding of exactly how and why marijuana affects us the way it does and why it can be therapeutic is so many different situations.

In most biological systems — such as the nervous system — our brain sends our body messages via chemicals called neurotransmitters, which are released from a neuron, called the presynaptic cell.

essaytyper broken pot plant vs human

They travel across a tiny gap called the synapsis and from there attach to specific receptors on a nearby neuron, called the postsynaptic cell. This is how our body controls just about everything from how we think to what we do — this is the process that keeps my fingers moving across the keyboard as I type this.

Rather than passing along messages from the presynaptic cells, cannabinoids are created on-demand by the postsynaptic cell. The cannabinoid then travels in reverse, to the presynaptic cell, where it attaches to a CB2 or CB2 receptor.

Since cannabinoids are responsible for things such as sleep, metabolism and appetite, among other thingsthis is important to understand. Once the cannabinoids attach to the presynaptic cells they can control what happens when the next messages are sent out. The CB receptors can be found throughout the entire body — CB1 receptors are generally found in the nervous system, connective tissues, gonads, glands and organs; CB2 receptors are most often found in the immune system and its associated structures — and in some tissues you will find both.

There may be a third cannabinoid receptor that has still yet to be found. The cannabinoids produced by our bodies are known as endogenous cannabinoids — or endocannabinoids. The most common endocannabinoids and most well understood are anandamide and 2-arachidonolyglycerol, or 2-AG.

The other naturally occurring cannabinoids are called phytocannabinoids, which are cannabinoids that come from plant matter. The cannabis sativa plant is known to have over natural compounds — of which at least 85 have been identified as cannabinoids.

CBN is created through a process called oxidization, when THC is exposed to the air, and it is mildly psychoactive.

CBG is non-psychoactive and has been shown to reduce intraocular pressure — explaining why marijuana works so well for glaucoma patients. There are also synthetic cannabinoids — created in part to help discover the endocannabinoid system and its capabilities. These synthetic cannabinoids were created to replicate THC and, as I mentioned in the last article, they are actually FDA approved for treatment of severe nausea and wasting syndrome.

Yet the naturally occurring cannabinoid remains illegal at a federal level…. The effects of endocannabinoids are more local and much shorter lived than that of cannabinoids from cannabis, due to the fact that they are broken down quicker. All cannabinoids and the endocannabinoid system itself are accepted to be the system behind regulating homeostasis.

Basically, without the endocannabinoid system, our bodies would have no means of keeping all the other biological systems in check.

For example — tumor cells are shown to have more cannabinoid receptors — when certain cannabinoids attach to the receptors in a cancerous cell it then continues to cause the cell to consume itself — therefore promoting homeostasis by destruction of the cell. Another great example of the endocannabinoid system at work would be at the site of an injury — cannabinoids would be decreasing the release of activators and sensitizers of the injured tissue which would stabilize the nerve to prevent an excessive response as well as calming immune cells; all of which aim to minimize pain and damage from the injury.

Alongside promoting homeostasis cannabinoids also play a large part in our social environment as well. Cannabinoids are responsible for behavior — as expressed in the way the psychoactive cannabinoid THC affects things such as humor and creativity.

This poses the theory that the endocannabinoid system one direct link between body and mind and the doorway to understanding our consciousness. Speaking of how THC affects the mind and the body as wellthe endocannabinoid system is the answer to that question.

Mullein Leaf Clears Mucus From The Body

When THC is introduced to the body it seeks out those cannabinoid receptors throughout the body. The THC aims to find the CB1 and CB2 receptors, and when it attaches to those receptors the effects vary depending on the potency of the plant being consumed.

CB1 receptors are the ones that control things such as sleep, appetite, mood and even the sensation of pain. When THC is introduced, these receptors alter the messages sent from presynaptic neuron to postsynaptic neuron — enhancing the effects. This is why insomniacs and rheumatoid arthritis patients can find relief through high-THC strains of marijuana. The CB2 receptors are the ones that regulate the immune system, so when THC attaches it starts an anti-inflammatory response.

It has also been shown to aid in the reduction of cancerous cells. The large number of THC cannabinoids attaching to the thousands of CB1 and CB2 receptors are altering the messages sent to our brains, therefore minimizing symptoms that make us uncomfortable and promoting homeostasis.

This is likely why it makes such a large impact on patients who are suffering from conditions such as epilepsy.I am glad we have come to understand the properties of the mullein plant and its mullein leaf.

The mullein plant is native to northern Africa, Asia and Europe, and was brought to the Americas and Australia. Many of the names are derived from the velvety texture of its big mullein leaf. Mullein leaf has long been used as an expectorant for treating respiratory congestion because it promotes the ejection of mucus, from the lungs. I follow Dr. I adopted a plant based diet and followed this nutritional guide to alkalize my body and remove mucus from it.

Though mullein leaf has been used to remove mucus from the body, specifically mucus from the lungs, I used mullein leaf to help remove mucus from my small intestine.

How to write an interesting fact book

The alternative medicine theory is the increasing intake of toxin laden acidic foods and dairy compromises the small intestine and lines it with a harmful mucus layer. The consumption of toxic foods and dairy promotes an acidic environment in the body and causes a harmful mucoid lining to develop in the intestine, which makes it difficult for nutrients to pass through its wall and feed the body.

Though my high fiber content of my plant based diet did scrape the intestine and remove food waste, this alone was not efficient in removing the mucoid layer. I had to approach its removal differently and needed to attack it on two fronts. Then I used mullein leaf the to clear the bad mucus from my small intestine so that it could more efficiently remove nutrients from food moving through it, and pass the nutrients into my blood stream.

After I used mullein leaf to remove the mucoid layer I became less hungry and I ate less which was an indication that my body was getting its required nutrients more efficiently.

The mucoid layer that was interfering with the nutrient breakdown and transfer to my bloodstream had been addressed. I eat a plant-based diet which is a nutrient dense diet and cleaning my small intestine with mullein leaf allowed me to more efficiently absorb those nutrients into my blood stream, feed my body, and support my immune system.

Short night times and long day times, you need to mimic this natural growth system that the cannabis loves so that you can produce a good vegetative or mimic a good vegetative stage for you cannabis plant. Also at this stage large leaves will begin to grow, these leaves serves as reflectors for the light that is very much needed for the growing plant, the plant would turn light into food.

At this stage the plant would normally use more food while it can, for it is getting ready for the flowering stage ahead of it. It does not need to be grown higher in order for the plant to mature. It can be kept inside a closet or a smaller space with minimal lighting. It can tolerate cold better and it produces higher yield of crops. Nitrogen would be a very good thing for this stage too, for nitrogen paired with light serves as the building blocks of the plants structure.

With longer days and shorter days on hand, our plant would need at least eighteen hours of light and six hours of darkness. After your plant is ready to move forward to the flowering stage, at this stage of your plants life your plant begins to show its sex. This stage you can now notice your plant will have small flower groupings that will soon become flowers or buds. This time the plant would need more night time sleep than it previously needed when it was still in the vegetative stage.

The large leaves that it used to have when it was still in the vegetative stage now begins to wear off; as it enters the flowering stage it focuses its growth to the incoming flowers. Make sure there are no leaks for the plants could be stressed out with this. This stage also means your plant would need twelve hours daylight and twelve hours night time.

See the difference in hours? The plant would need that much night time in order to produce and develop its buds. Make sure you have a room perfect for the light cycles, an enclosed room without light leaks would be very perfect, when you have this clear you may have a well fed healthy plants ready to grow for you.

Light Cycle. Every cannabis plant grower should know that the cannabis plant is like a human being that needs to have day and night. The difference is that plants produce more food at night; humans simply digest what was eaten and store that energy for future use.

Just like the cannabis plant, it stores food at night so that it can produce more and store more for future growth. Seeds For Sale. Buy Marijuana Seeds. Chapter 1. Chapter 2. Chapter 3. Chapter 4. Chapter 5. Chapter 6. Chapter 7. Chapter 8. Chapter 9. Chapter Start Growing. Grow Techniques.

Cannabis News Recap: November Top 10 Marijuana Strains for the Holidays. They may look harmless enough, but plants can harbor some of the most deadly poisons known. From the death of Socrates by poison hemlock to the accidental ingestion of deadly nightshade by children, poisonous plants have been responsible for human deaths throughout history.

Get to know some of the most infamous plants and their poisons with this macabre list. Closely related to poison hemlock the plant that famously killed Socrateswater hemlock has been deemed "the most violently toxic plant in North America. However, water hemlock is infused with deadly cicutoxin, especially in its roots, and will rapidly generate potentially fatal symptoms in anyone unlucky enough to eat it.

Painful convulsions, abdominal cramps, nausea, and death are common, and those who survive are often afflicted with amnesia or lasting tremors. Indeed, it is the sweetness of the berries that often lures children and unwitting adults to consume this lethal plant. A native of wooded or waste areas in central and southern Eurasia, deadly nightshade has dull green leaves and shiny black berries about the size of cherries.

Nightshade contains atropine and scopolamine in its stems, leaves, berries, and roots, and causes paralysis in the involuntary muscles of the body, including the heart. Even physical contact with the leaves may cause skin irritation. White snakeroot is a North American herb with flat-topped clusters of small white flowers and contains a toxic alcohol known as trematol. Unlike those who have died from directly ingesting deadly plants, poor Nancy Hanks was poisoned by simply drinking the milk of a cow who had grazed on the plant.

Indeed, both the meat and milk from poisoned livestock can pass the toxin to human consumers. Symptoms of "milk poisoning" include loss of appetite, nausea, weakness, abdominal discomfort, reddened tongue, abnormal acidity of the blood, and death.

Luckily farmers are now aware of this life-threatening hazard and make efforts remove the plant from animal pastures. Widely grown as an ornamental, the castor bean is an attractive plant native to Africa. While the processed seeds are the source of castor oil, they naturally contain the poison ricin and are deadly in small amounts.

It only takes one or two seeds to kill a child and up to eight to kill an adult. Ricin works by inhibiting the synthesis of proteins within cells and can cause severe vomiting, diarrhea, seizures, and even death. The poison was used in to assassinate Georgi Markov, a journalist who spoke out against the Bulgarian government, and has been mailed to several U.

Most fatalities are the result of accidental ingestion by children and pets. Also called jequirity beans, these piously-named seeds contain abrin, an extremely deadly ribosome-inhibiting protein.

Rosary peas are native to tropical areas and are often used in jewelry and prayer rosaries. While the seeds are not poisonous if intact, seeds that are scratched, broken, or chewed can be lethal. When it comes to pots, your cannabis wants one thing and one thing only: a safe, healthy place for root development.

Without healthy roots, your cannabis will never thrive. Roots are in charge of water retention, nutrient absorption, anchoring the plant, and also facilitate vegetative growth. All of these functions must be considered when choosing a container. Garden centers and grow supply chains offer different pots that vary by material composition, shape, size, and perforation style.

Standard plastic containers are a popular option for growers operating on a budget. These pots are inexpensive, but still provide the essentials for your plants.

Otherwise known as terra cotta, ceramic pots offer a unique set of benefits to growers in hot climates. A relatively new innovation in container gardening, roots in fabric pots grow to the outer edges and attempt to bypass the porous fabric wall. Instead, they are cut back, allowing new growth to occur. This post was originally published on March 13, It was most recently updated on June 29,
